If water has reached the engine’s air intake, trying to start it can cause serious damage. Leave it off, get somewhere dry, and call. We move flooded cars on a flatbed once a truck can reach them safely.

- Get yourself and your passengers to higher ground
- Leave the engine off, even if the water has gone down
- Note how high the water reached on the car
- Tell dispatch where the car is and how deep the water is now

Don’t wade into moving water to reach the car. If it is safe to reach and you know how, disconnecting the negative battery terminal can help protect the electronics. Check your owner’s manual first.
In heavy rain some streets can’t be reached until the water goes down. Dispatch will tell you on the call when a truck can get to you.
A comprehensive policy with Acts of Nature (AON) coverage may pay for flood damage. Check your policy, and take photos of the water level on the car before it is towed.

The water went down. Can I just drive it to the shop?
It’s safer not to. Even if it starts, water in the intake, the transmission or the wiring can cause damage that shows up days later. Have it towed and let the shop check the oil and the air filter first.
