Towed by the MMDA? How to get your car back

If your car isn’t where you parked it and there’s no sign of a break-in, it may have been towed for a parking violation. In Metro Manila, that’s usually by the MMDA or a city’s own traffic office.

Direct Assist doesn’t tow for the MMDA and can’t release impounded cars. But we can help once your car is out, and here’s how to get it out.

1. Find out who towed it, and where it went

Call the MMDA hotline, 136, with your plate number. They can tell you whether the MMDA towed it and which impounding area it went to. If the MMDA has no record, call the traffic office of the city where you parked. Several cities run their own towing.

2. Bring the right documents

Requirements can change, so confirm them on the phone. Usually you’ll need:

• the vehicle’s OR/CR (official receipt and certificate of registration)
• your driver’s license
• a valid ID, plus an authorization letter if you’re not the registered owner
• the violation ticket, if one was issued

3. Pay the fines and fees

Expect to pay the parking violation fine, the towing fee, and an impounding fee that grows each day the car stays in. So go as soon as you can. Get official receipts for everything.

4. Check the car before you drive off

Walk around the car and take photos before you leave the impound area. Note any new scratches or dents and raise them there and then.

If it won’t start after the impound

A car that sat in an open lot for a few days can come out with a flat battery. We can jump-start it at the impound gate, or tow it home or to your mechanic if it needs more.
